I finally went and got myself some Kefir grains so I can try out homemade brewing of the stuff.

Kefir? You ask. Kefir is pretty much a fermented milk drink. (I am using milk Kefir, although there is a”water” version of it as well.).

When you hear fermented milk drink, basically think ….probiotic drink.

Sorry honey, it's sugar!

One of my Dietitian friends recently reviewed a “low sugar” cookbook that is currently being marketed by a UK “personality”. It turns out the recipes are pretty much full of sugar, in the form of honey in most cases. At the end of the review article, were many, many comments about honey not being sugar. I often see “low sugar” recipes which use honey as the sweetener and am sorry to say, yes, it’s a sugar.

June is just around the corner. This is pretty exciting for me, as it marks my 20 year anniversary as a Dietitian. Being a Dietitian for the last twenty years has been a super ride. I certainly don’t regret my choice of career one little bit. I really have loved every minute of being a Dietitian.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how much I have learned from the last 20 years and thought I’d share the top 20 things I have learned in the last 20 years as a Dietitian.

Well it’s better late than never as we have already had one whole day of 2014.
Have you decided on any resolutions? Does anyone ever keep these?
Here in the AM Dietetics household, we are’t doing resolutions but we are making a few changes that we know are realistic and will be long lasting.

Let's keep it Real people.

I’ve been having a look at a few food blogs, Instagram posts, tweets and recipes lately. Okay, yes, all the time if I’m honest. There seems to be a common thread which I’m starting to wonder about. A lot of these meals/recipes/shakes and “potions” seem to often have a “superfood” ingredient.
Mmm, let’s make a maca powder chia protein shake or a “green- powder” bowl with acai berries. Or maybe I could go for some coconut powder mixed with a scoop of protein in a high energy ball.

My day out : Chicken Farm and Processing Plant - from Farm to Fork.

This week, I was fortunate enough to take part in a media tour of a chicken farm and processing facility, hosted by Australian Chicken Meat Industry and Ingham’s Enterprises. I was in two minds about going, being that it was smack in the middle of the school holidays but then thought to myself “when am I ever going to get the chance to go to a chicken farm again???” I think it’s really important for all of us to have a good grasp of where our food comes from and of the processes involved in getting it from Farm to Fork.

Want to know more about Vitamin D? – join the The Health Hangout (Feb 7th)

Looking up at the grey sky that still hangs around after the recent bout of snow, I’m wondering how on earth anyone is going to manage to get their Vitamin D from sunshine today. As a pale person, I spent a lot of my youth being protected from the harsh Australian sun and we never gave much thought to the fact I might have been low on Vitamin D.

The “sunshine vitamin”, which is produced by the body in response to sunlight, has been in the press a lot lately. More and more, we are seeing deficiencies and illnesses associated with low levels of Vitamin D are on the rise.

Please join us for a health chat on 7th February 2013. Read on for details…

Q & A - Answers to readers questions- high protein diet for illness and non dairy calcium sources

I have had quite a few questions after my last blog post and have picked out a few to answer here. I hope that the answers help a few people, not just those who emailed in. I will cover a few today and, hopefully, answer the rest later. I do tend to write long answers! By the way, I did answer a couple “off line”, as confidentiality or an individual consultation was requested. So here we go:

Have a question for the Dietitian? Ask away...

Have a nutrition question you have been wondering about?
I’ve been pleased to see quite a few questions sent in to me via email or the contact form and thought it would be a good idea to have an “Ask the Dietitian” post this month, to give you the opportunity to ask, have questions answered/responded to and also to get the benefit of seeing answers to others’ questions.

Happy 2013 to all : make it a healthy start to the new year

Happy 2013 to you all! I’ve always loved New Years Day. I’m not sure why, but it just seems to have an exciting feel to it- like you can start afresh and all things are possible for the year ahead. I guess for a lot of people, this means resolutions. Quite often, resolutions include those around health and diet and making positive changes to lifestyles.
