Well it’s better late than never as we have already had one whole day of 2014.
Have you decided on any resolutions? Does anyone ever keep these?
Here in the AM Dietetics household, we are’t doing resolutions but we are making a few changes that we know are realistic and will be long lasting.

Let's keep it Real people.

I’ve been having a look at a few food blogs, Instagram posts, tweets and recipes lately. Okay, yes, all the time if I’m honest. There seems to be a common thread which I’m starting to wonder about. A lot of these meals/recipes/shakes and “potions” seem to often have a “superfood” ingredient.
Mmm, let’s make a maca powder chia protein shake or a “green- powder” bowl with acai berries. Or maybe I could go for some coconut powder mixed with a scoop of protein in a high energy ball.
Why the fuss about chicken?
Posted on Oct 9, 01:31 AM in Health and Well Being and Weight Concerns. No comments.

Someone told me that I should pretty much start this blog off with a joke.. there are so many and they are so bad! I had to settle for this one:
Q: “why did the chicken have to wash his mouth out with soap”
A: “because of all the fowl language”
Oh dear!
Jokes aside, chicken is such a popular meat, it’s scary. Consumption of chicken in Australia has slowly increased over the years and, as mentioned in my previous blog, we are eating about 45 Kg of the stuff per person each year.
So why is chicken so popular?
My day out : Chicken Farm and Processing Plant - from Farm to Fork.
Posted on Oct 3, 04:31 AM in General and Health and Well Being. Comments [3].

This week, I was fortunate enough to take part in a media tour of a chicken farm and processing facility, hosted by Australian Chicken Meat Industry and Ingham’s Enterprises. I was in two minds about going, being that it was smack in the middle of the school holidays but then thought to myself “when am I ever going to get the chance to go to a chicken farm again???” I think it’s really important for all of us to have a good grasp of where our food comes from and of the processes involved in getting it from Farm to Fork.
Why “wine o clock” isnt such a good thing for your weight
Posted on Sep 15, 12:15 AM in Weight Concerns and Health and Well Being. No comments.
Since I arrived back in Brisbane, I have been enjoying some great hospitality and the brilliant Australian food and wines. I have been staying with family members who like to have a drink each night with dinner and sure have noticed the weight creeping on. Oops.
Over the years, I have seen many women who are looking to reduce weight; and I have found that regular drinking of wine over the week is a big contributing factor to weight gain and a bit of a barrier to weight loss.
Need to make a pizza dough? Just 2 ingredients!
Posted on Aug 15, 03:13 AM in Kids and Young People and Health and Well Being. No comments.

I was listening to the radio the other day and heard a Home Economist talking about cheap, quick and easy meals. (Yes, it was MY kind of radio show!). I was intrigued to hear a throw away reference to a really easy pizza dough made from just two ingredients – flour and yoghurt- so I had to investigate.

We all want our kids to eat healthy, right? Healthy eating doesn’t just happen. It is up to us as parents to raise healthy eaters with positive attitudes to food, health and cooking. It’s so important to establish healthy eating habits from early on. It’s never too late, though! If you are keen to get your family on track to healthy eating, here are my top tips for raising healthy eaters
Your teenager big on sugar? Maybe they aren’t getting enough sleep.

Teenagers sleep a lot, right? Well maybe this isn’t such a bad thing, according to a small study on sleep restriction and dietary intake, published this month. In this experiment, forty one teenagers (between 14 and 16) were placed on a three week sleep programme and their diets were monitored. The first week included normal sleep, to stabilize sleeping patterns and the following weeks included restrictions, (6.5 hours vs 10 hrs).
What they found was…..
A Fe- what? Discovery of a new fruit - the Feijoa
Posted on May 22, 03:14 AM in Health and Well Being. No comments.

It’s a wonderful thing to discover new foods and I had the opportunity to try a new fruit recently. Some of you will probably be familiar with the fruit and wonder where the heck I’ve been but I got to experience the Feijoa for the first time when meeting new friends in Brisbane.

Looking up at the grey sky that still hangs around after the recent bout of snow, I’m wondering how on earth anyone is going to manage to get their Vitamin D from sunshine today. As a pale person, I spent a lot of my youth being protected from the harsh Australian sun and we never gave much thought to the fact I might have been low on Vitamin D.
The “sunshine vitamin”, which is produced by the body in response to sunlight, has been in the press a lot lately. More and more, we are seeing deficiencies and illnesses associated with low levels of Vitamin D are on the rise.

I have had quite a few questions after my last blog post and have picked out a few to answer here. I hope that the answers help a few people, not just those who emailed in. I will cover a few today and, hopefully, answer the rest later. I do tend to write long answers! By the way, I did answer a couple “off line”, as confidentiality or an individual consultation was requested. So here we go:
Questions about nutrition?
Do you have any nutrition questions? I'm always interested in hearing them, and I'll do my best to answer.
